Upper Dir is a mountainous district in the far north-west of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, long known mainly as the gateway to the Kumrat valley but increasingly visited for its own forested valleys and rivers. Threaded by the Panjkora River and ringed by high peaks along the Afghan frontier, it is a green, traditional region of terraced fields, deodar forest and stone villages, with the university town of Sheringal as a useful base. The district holds a number of quiet valleys and meadows, including the alpine pastures around Kumrat at its head, and offers fishing, forest walks and a strong sense of unspoiled rural life away from the main tourist trail. Because most travellers pass through on their way to Kumrat, Upper Dir itself remains lightly visited, which is part of its charm for those who linger. Access is by road from Lower Dir and the Swat side, and the region is best in summer and early autumn when the high valleys are open and the rivers run clear.
