Gilgit is the administrative capital of Gilgit-Baltistan and the central hub from which the region's three great valleys branch out, towards Hunza in the north, Skardu in the east and Ghizer and Chitral in the west. Sitting at the confluence of the Gilgit and Hunza rivers, it is a busy market town rather than a scenic resort, but it makes a practical overnight stop and holds a few worthwhile sights of its own. Chief among them is the Kargah Buddha, a seventh-century rock carving in a side valley, and the historic suspension bridges over the wide grey river. Gilgit is also the road and air gateway for the whole region, with flights from Islamabad and the junction where the Karakoram Highway meets the routes to Naltar and the Shandur road. Travellers typically pass through Gilgit on the way to somewhere else, using it to refuel, change money and stock up before heading into the higher valleys. It suits the practical traveller as a base, and the nearby Naltar valley offers an easy and rewarding day or overnight escape from the town.
