About Astore Valley tours

Astore is a quiet, green valley on the eastern flank of Nanga Parbat, reached by a side road that branches off the Karakoram Highway near Jaglot. It is far less visited than Hunza or Skardu, which is precisely its appeal, a landscape of pine forest, terraced fields and traditional stone villages with the great mass of Nanga Parbat looming behind. The valley's showpiece is Rama, a meadow and small alpine lake set in thick forest above the main town, reached by a short jeep ride and an easy walk. Astore is also the trailhead for the eastern approaches to Nanga Parbat and for the high Deosai crossing into Skardu, which experienced groups use as a spectacular alternative route. Accommodation is simple, with forest camps and basic guesthouses, so Astore suits travellers happy to trade comfort for solitude and genuine mountain scenery. It is a summer destination, best from June to September, and is often added to a Gilgit or Skardu itinerary by those wanting a quieter day in the forest.

Astore Valley tours: common questions

How do I get to Astore and Rama?

Turn off the Karakoram Highway near Jaglot onto the Astore road, then take a jeep from Astore town up to Rama. Most visits are by private 4x4 as part of a wider tour.

Is Rama Lake worth visiting?

Yes, Rama is a beautiful forest-ringed alpine lake and meadow with views of Nanga Parbat, and it is far quieter than the famous lakes elsewhere.

Can I cross from Astore to Skardu via Deosai?

Yes, experienced groups cross Deosai from the Astore side to reach Skardu in summer, but it is a long, rough high-altitude jeep route only open in season.

When is the best time to visit Astore?

June to September, when the forest road to Rama is open and the meadow is green.
