Five days is the sweet spot for a road-based Skardu trip — enough to see the lakes, a fort and Deosai without rushing. Here is a route that mirrors how the best group tours run it.

Day 1 — Islamabad to Chilas

The long first leg up the Karakoram Highway through Besham. Overnight at Chilas to break the drive.

Day 2 — Chilas to Skardu

Follow the Indus into Baltistan, arriving Skardu by afternoon. Settle in and visit the Kharpocho Fort viewpoint at sunset.

Day 3 — Shangrila & the Kachura lakes

A relaxed day at Shangrila and Upper Kachura Lake, with boating on Lower Kachura. Add the Manthal Buddha Rock and the Skardu bazaar.

Day 4 — Deosai Plains

The highlight: a full jeep day across the Deosai National Park to Sheosar Lake, the second-highest plateau on earth, alive with wildflowers in summer.

Day 5 — Shigar & departure

Visit Shigar Fort and its orchard valley before starting the return, or fly out from Skardu if your package includes it.
