Deosai Plains: Best Time to Visit & What to Know

The Deosai Plains — the second-highest plateau on earth — are only open a few months a year, and timing is everything. Here is what to know.
When Deosai opens
| Window | Status |
|---|---|
| Late Jun – early Sep | Open, the only reliable window |
| Mid-Jul – Aug | Wildflowers at their peak |
| Sep – Jun | Snowbound and closed |
The plateau sits above 4,000m, so it is buried in snow for most of the year. The access roads from Skardu and Astore clear only from roughly late June.
What you will see
In season, Deosai is a vast carpet of wildflowers grazed by marmots, with Sheosar Lake at its far edge and a chance — with luck and a guide — of the Himalayan brown bear. It is a full-day jeep excursion at serious altitude.
Planning tips
Go with an experienced driver, dress for cold even in summer, and acclimatise in Skardu first. Mornings are calmest for the lake reflections.
Frequently asked questions
Can I visit Deosai in May? Almost never — it is still under snow.
Is it hard on the body? The altitude is significant; take it slowly.
Skardu or Astore side? Both work; Skardu is the more common base.
